Philological discourse in the poetics of A.S. Byatt's fairy story “The djinn in the nightingale's eye”

The article is devoted to the philological discourse as the key feature of A.S. Bayette's poetics in her work “The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye” which changes its genre characteristics. Interdiscursiveness is regarded as the interaction of non-artistic (philological) and artistic discourses. Non-artistic discourse is aesthetized in the artistic space, acquiring features of artistic imagery, while the artistic mode receives the properties of noumenality, being intellectualized. The diversity of philological discourse is supported by the interaction of inserted stories and allusions, contributing to the accumulation of the meaning and structuralization of the text. “The Canterbury Tales” by J. Chaucer and the Arab folklore stories “1001 Nights” are defining in the work of A.S. Bayette “The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye”. Stimulated by them, the poetics of “told stories” in combination with the philological discourse embracing them, creates “ensembles of discursive events” (Valerij I. Tyupa), which, while “supporting” the specifics of the character system, determine the ambiguity of the work of literature in question, and create conditions necessary for the artistic variability of its perception by the reader
