The article presents the results of a philosophical and cultural study of bibliographies, autobiographies and analysis of the works of famous people. The patterns between calling (the person's awareness of the presence or absence of vocations in his life) and the quality of life, satisfaction with it (the subjective aspect of vocation), as well as between the calling and the fruitfulness of life efforts (the objective aspect of vocation) are revealed. The original definition of the concept of vocation is suggested, its meanings and concepts are singled out. Calling is a universal, meaningful task, the solution of which organizes and connects all life-building efforts of a person into one unity. The authors formulate criteria for calling (a special emotional attitude towards a certain type of activity, inexhaustible interest, creating a constant influx of energy, special abilities and skill, inspiration, consolation, high social significance of the case, etc.).The authors also manifest the principles of seeking a vocation; offer a number of arguments in support of the need and importance of interdisciplinary complex studies of the phenomenon and the attitude of vocation. Conclusions obtained during the research may be of interest to representatives of creative professions, to which the authors primarily relate the profession of the teacher.
