The philosophical dogmatic teaching of Georg Hermes about the attributes of God: aspects of method

Бесплатный доступ

The article presents the teaching of the German Catholic dogmatist of the first half of the 19th century Georg Hermes on the attributes of divine nature. Particular attention is paid to methodical aspects, as Hermes entered the history of theology as one of the first authors who attempted to adapt the methods of New European philosophy, first of all Kantian criticism, to the exposition of Christian dogmatics. Initially, the author traces the stages of the attitude towards Hermesianism and the degree of its influence from its official condemnation by Pope Gregory XVI in 1835 to the revival of interest towards Kant in Catholicism in the second half of the 20th century after the Second Vatican Council. Then the general characteristics of Hermes’ philosophical and rational approach are presented and aspects of the application of his methodology in a particular dogmatic context are demonstrated.
