The article examines the doctrines and ideas of thinkers about the concept and essence of the philosophical category "justice". In particular, they study the philosophical teachings of such historical eras as the Ancient World, the Middle Ages, and the New Time. The positions of ancient Greek scientists - Heraclitus, Aristotle and Plato - are determined. Interpretations of the concept of "justice" by Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine are given. The philosophical doctrine of justice of I. Kant is studied. The content of the criminal law principle of justice is analyzed. The implementation of this principle in modern criminal law is investigated.
