Problem and purpose. The article reveals the problems of physical education of 5th-7th graders of the general academic school. Among them is the problem of updating the content, methods and forms of teaching physical culture. The purpose of the articleis to formulate the didactic principles of teaching physical culture to 5th-7th graders and to determine the appropriate methods and forms of training in the context of the implementation of FSES. The research methodology is based on the analysis of normative and legal documents regulating the teaching of physical culture in general academic schools, the analysis and generalization of the results of scientific research on the studied problem of foreign and domestic scientists, the experience of teaching physical culture to 5th-7th graders. Results. On the basis of the system-activity and competency-based approaches, the basic requirements for updating the content, methods and forms of teaching physical culture in the general academic school are presented. The basic principles of the formation of physical culture of 5th-7th graders in the classroom and in extra-curricular activities are formulated. The expediency of inclusion of sports games in the educational process as a condition for the development of the motivation for studying physical culture and playing sports is substantiated. Conclusion. The article identifies the problem of finding effective technologies for teaching physical culture in today's general academic school. The results presented in the article will contribute to its solution.
