The problem of specificity of the sketchbook “Fregat Pallada” (Pallas’ Frigate) written by I. Gorchakov has attracted attention of literary scholars during various periods. However, a research of such aspects as poetics, stylistics, relation to European and Russian genre traditions does not provide an answer to a whole range of important questions. Among important issues is the identification of peculiarities demonstrating perception of the strange, foreign space from the standpoint of physiological reactions of a neophyte voyager. The analysis of the narrative of the given level shows that I. Goncharov, by means of activation of the above mentioned components, initiated a debate with the romantic version of travelogue proceedings. His polemic is based on a number of significant aesthetic priorities intrinsic to the Russian “naturalist school”.
