Flashcards as a method of effective word learning: a pilot study

The aim of this article is to assess the effectiveness of the flashcard method in memorizing foreign words (English and Chinese). Modern technologies have significantly changed the process of learning foreign languages, offering new methods and tools for effective memorization and assimilation of the studied material. One of these methods is the use of flash cards, which have long established themselves as a convenient and effective tool for learning foreign vocabulary. In recent years, thanks to the development of mobile applications and online platforms, flash cards have become more accessible and popular among foreign language learners. The key cognitive effects underlying this method are discussed: spaced repetition, the testing effect and multimodal perception. The material for this pilot study was obtained from the academic results obtained in 2025 by the second-year students majoring in English. A questionnaire was designed to obtain students’ opinions about the role of flashcards in their own academic achievements in vocabulary acquisition. The results revealed a high level of perceived convenience and effectiveness in using the Quizlet mobile application: approximately 75 % of participants reported that it significantly supported their vocabulary acquisition, particularly during exam and test preparation. Although individual differences in the perception of digital tools were identified, indicating the need for further investigation of the factors influencing the success of its application.
