The essence of the competence approach in the contemporary professional education is discussed on the basis of theoretical analysis. It is concluded that the value meaning competences of the military higher school students must be formed on the basis of the competence approach. The presented model of forming the value meaning competences of the future military engineers includes the following components: purpose, content and process, results and assessment. The specics of this model are revealed. It is noted, that the prognostic function of the model is realization of the technology of forming the value meaning competences in the process of studying the humanitarian subjects
