The development of rhetorical competence of university lecturers in the further education system

The research analyzes the components of the university lecturer’s rhetorical competence in the further education system based on Russian and international educational practices. The historical and cultural foundations of domestic academic eloquence are considered as well. The contemporary academic discourse is characterized as a sociocultural phenomenon. From the perspective of evolutionary development, the rhetorical competence of a lecturer, an integral feature of verbal identity and a member of the scientific community, is regarded as a set of knowledge and skills in the context of both academic discourse and academic eloquence. The study presents the practical aspects of rhetorical competence development in relation to oral, written, and electronic communication. In addition, it identifies and describes the sociocultural, linguistic, moral and ethical aspects. The author reveals the basic rhetorical techniques conducive to the performance of the role of the communicative leader by a mentor. The emphasis is placed on the application of rhetorical knowledge and skills during interactive lectures. The rhetorical speech allows lecturers to disclose the details of the teaching profession and has a great educational impact on students. The author concludes that lecturer’s speech is of high educational value in general.
