The institution of using special knowledge in Russian criminal proceedings has undergone a long evolution. One of the stages of formation is the period from the beginning of the Revolution of 1917 until the adoption of the Code of Criminal Procedure of the RSFSR in 1960. The first normative acts regulating legal proceedings immediately after the revolution are interesting both because of their continuity with the Charter of Criminal Procedure of 1864 and pre-revolutionary legislation in general, and on the other hand, with the norms that were born out of the need of practice and were a reflection of the views of legal scholars of that time. The article traces the development of the institution of using special knowledge and its forms from the beginning of 1917 to the Code of Criminal Procedure of the RSFSR in 1960, identifying the continuity of modern forms of using special knowledge with the forms of using special knowledge of the past.
