About the dialectics of top and bottom: ressentiment as a principle of mass culture

Бесплатный доступ

The subject of consideration is the phenomenon of mass culture, the conceptual comprehension of which reveals the characteristics of an oxymoron. If culture testifies about a person who produces, creates, and therefore is free, then mass culture, with its emphasis on consumption, can be read as a combination of the incongruous, resulting from the dominance of the mass person. Mass culture is being established as a result of the victories of democracy, but this is a very peculiar “victory”. The classical version of the master-slave dialectic substantiates the superiority of the slave as a producer, but a slave who has undergone a change in his state in society in the order of mass movements does not automatically acquire an altered consciousness, which leads to the emergence of resentment - powerless envious anger. The power acquired by a mass person in the space of culture is realized as the destruction of the classical hierarchy of the essential forces of a person.
