The article examines global and national trends in poverty and economic inequality, including against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the work is to identify national and global trends in poverty and economic inequality and to identify possible risks for Belarus concerning the aggravation of the problems of poverty and economic inequality. It is emphasized that the welfare state best solves the problems of poverty and economic inequality. In the short term, there is an increase in poverty in the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of trends of poverty and economic inequality in Belarus are highlighted. Correlation and regression analysis of the dependence of the level of absolute poverty on GDP per capita of Belarus indicates the inverse dependence of the level of absolute poverty on the size of GDP per capita.
