The coat of arms was an important visual and legal symbol of urban status in pre-industrial Russia. The article is clarified the dates of approval of the coats of arms of the cities of the Middle Volga region and Zavolzhye area. The typology of the urban heraldry of the region is given. The potential of heraldry in the study of the city as a multifaceted socio-cultural phenomenon is shown.
