The article reveals the interpretation of urban environment from the standpoint of various areas of scientific knowledge – urbanistics, ecology, economics, and sociology. The author analyzes the interdisciplinary con-ceptualizations of urban environment, developed in the works of Russian and foreign scientists – O.Ya. Yanitskiy, T.M. Dridze, L.B. Kogan, V.L. Glazychev, B. Latour, J. Gail. The conclusion is made about the methodological unproductiveness of narrowly subject approaches and the need for methodological synesthesia in understanding the urban environment as a multicomponent phenomenon. Based on the analysis, the author's definition of urban environment is formulated as a complex of interrelated conditions (natural and artificially created, material and non-material) that have a direct or indirect impact on the life support and vital functions of the population. The possibilities of realizing a wide range of life-supporting and vital human needs determine the quality of the urban environment
