The article examines the diapason of use of theoretical laws of random characteristic distribution. The study of the reliability of technology is the basis for organizing its effective use. Random manifestation of faults determines the probabilistic nature of the reliability assessment of these events. Theoretical distribution laws are applied to approximate experimental information. Logarithmic-normal dependence is especially highlighted. To analyze the possibility of their application, special samples of refusals of combine harvesters were taken. Probability functions of random variable scattering are presented. Probability functions of random variable scattering are presented. The influence of the coefficient of variation on the accuracy of coincidence of empirical and theoretical results of the study is shown. Based on the estimation of the calculation error, the borders of application of the considered patterns are justified.
