The article examines the current state of media environment of leading Russian universities, which is based on periodicals and Internet portals. The important feature of these elements of media environment is their focus on various segments of external audience, on the transmission of educational institution brand values. University mass media is the factor influencing university brands in the framework of new categories of universities formation — federal, research, flagship.
