Artistic Psychologism and the Concept of Personality (theoretical and methodological review)

The article highlights the need for a theoretical and methodological formulation of the problem of the connections between the main stages in the formation of artistic psychologism and the concepts of personality that dominated the art of speech in a particular period. It is argued that conscious rejection of psychologism in different epochs serves as an important marker not only of the writer's individuality but also of literary "commonality"; psychologism itself is interesting as a tool for depicting a person and comprehending the depth of his personality starting from the era of realism, when the features of the individual psyche are perceived by writers as differential against the background of stable typological features, while what comes to the forefront in science and criticism is the study of feelings, emotions, and actions of heroes (and more broadly – of social types) as a result of certain historical and social processes. One of the vectors of methodological coverage of this problem is illustrated by the example of scientific and critical perception of Fyodor Dostoevsky's writings in the Russian tradition. Through the assessments made by researchers, it is possible to clearly see changes in attitudes toward artistic psychologism, these caused by the dominance of different concepts of personality, both determined socio-politically and worldview-conditioned. Thus, it is proved that taking into account the connections between artistic psychologism and the dominant or marginal concept of personality in a particular era can contribute to clarifying the algorithms for analyzing the poetics of a text that would be most adequate to a specific historical and literary material. This approach is consistent with the axiom of the "ultimate meaningfulness of a literary text" (V. I. Tyupa), assumes the discovery of a certain "model of personal presence" ("I am in the world") at the heart of its aesthetic orderliness, and does not contradict the complex view of psychologism, which does not lend itself to a universal method of study and needs a coordinating approach.
