The paper examines the causes of the modern crisis in philosophical knowledge of man, which is referred to as “anthropological catastrophe”. The purpose of the study is to find the source of the destruction of the “anthropological question” in its classical interpretation, what determines the lack of demand of the classical definition of man and the formation of new forms of perceptions of man. Various authors attribute the anthropological crisis to the technological changes, social and economic transformations of recent years. The reason for this crisis lies in the foundations of European philosophical knowledge of man - in the anthropological concepts of Kant and Condillac. Analysis of basic perceptions of man in European philosophy revealed a fundamental contradiction of anthropological approaches. Classical philosophical knowledge does not explain, analyze or even describe the object of study - the man, but designs his speculative twin. In the end of the study the question of the possibility of a non-European tradition of human exploration is raised.
