The ideological and artistic originality of "Sylvias lovers" by Elizabeth Gaskell

The article analyses Gaskell's historical novel "Sylvia's Lovers" (1863). The stress is done on the artistic means of psychological analysis of the narration such as internal monologue and free indirect discourse. The article deals with the impact of Christian ethics on the formation of the moral structure of the character. The paper discusses how historical and social conflicts are intertwined in the novel. Also, the article provides reasoning for Gaskell's interest to the genre of historical novel.
