The author examines the history of cooperation between researchers of the Russian North Ivan Fedorovich Ushakov and Alexander Ivanovich Kopanev. Their works largely laid the foundation for contemporary directions of scientific research, local history works and historical education in the region. In addition to scientific interaction, the scientists were united by professional and personal friendship. Both historians addressed similar scientific problems in their work: the history of the peasantry, fishery and economy in the 16th-17th centuries, manuscript book and folk culture. The acquaintance of the scientists took place in 1972, after the publication of Ushakov’s book «Kola Land». In 1980, A. I. Kopanev acted as an opponent in the defense of Ushakov’s dissertation. The controversy that arose during the defense did not lead to a cooling of relations. The communication and friendship of scientists continued further.
