Inflation is a phenomenon that inevitably accompanies the development of a market-type economy. However, regulating inflationary processes and creating conditions for maintaining price stability is one of the tasks of government policy. The consequences of inflation processes in Russia are very diverse and include not only a sharp decline in the solvent demand of the population, but also the deterioration of the property structure of production enterprises, as well as the violation of the ability of enterprises to restore the production base. A clear understanding of inflation is necessary to develop effective measures to address its level, chronic nature and destructive effects. This article considers the main approaches to the essence and definition of inflation, as well as its main types. The rationale for the decline in investment activity during the period of high inflation in the Russian economy is given. The authors have considered the stages and types of inflation from 1992 to 2022, as well as conducted a statistical analysis of the main indicators characterizing the change in the price level in accordance with different methodological approaches.
