The awareness of doctors of the urinary incontinence symptom in elderly women

Objective: to assess the awareness of doctors in relation to the symptom of urinary incontinence in older women and the elderly. Materials and methods. In this work we have applied the methods of questionnaires, statistical analysis with the use of mathematical estimates (average error, the accuracy of the difference), comparative analysis. Results. It is established that reliable official statistics on the prevalence of such urological pathology as incontinence in older women and the elderly in Russia is not available. However, incontinence is noted in 38.6 % of Russian women. A comparative analysis of the opinions of different experts on urinary incontinence in women of different ages showed that the majority of patients with this symptom are deprived of healthy lifestyle, due to the inability to stay a long time in public places and long trips. The analysis of knowledge and opinions on the issue of the treatment of the symptom of urinary incontinence identified lack of vigilance in regard to it. The conclusions. The survey showed that most physicians, neurologists and surgeons believe that incontinence occurs in less than 10 % of elderly women, the majority of gynecologists think that its percentage is 20% to 30% and only urologists believe that more than 30% of elderly women suffer from urinary incontinence. The internal disease doctors think that the most effective method of treatment of incontinence in women is surgery, the neurologists believe in physiotherapy methods, urologists and gynecologists rely on psychological methods of helping such patients, surgeons rely on surgery.
