Two models of nation-building in modern Russia, such as integration and multicultural, are explicated in the study on the basis of the analysis of scientific literature and normative documents in the field of national policy. There are two versions of the integration model. The first is an ethno-cultural model with an emphasis on the special status of the Russian people, Russian culture and. The second one is a civic political model. The multicultural model is substantiated by the objective historical reality of ethnocultural diversity, as well as by the articulation of its positive significance for the development of the country. The close interconnection of both models of nation-building is emphasized, and the inadmissibility of the dominance of one of them in practical national policy is pointed out. The balance of the nation-building process can be ensured by the integration project for Russian society, which takes into account the effective management of ethnic and cultural diversity. It is concluded that successful national integration of Russian society is possible in case of building a democratic state and a civic nation with the recognition of all ethnic and religious differences, and not the revival of an empire with its vertical political and ethnocultural structure.
