Intelligentnost as a value for the characters of A. Chekhov's novella "Duel"

The article is devoted to the concept intelligentnost as a value for the characters of A. Chekhov’s novella “Duel” (1891). We have analyzed the utterances of the characters with different attitude to the protagonist Laevsky - sympathetic or accusatory, expressed by doctor Samoilenko and biologist fon Koren. Laevsky's autoreflection correlates with the stages of his life - long before the duel, the day before the duel, and with the growth and resolution of crisis. The final words of the diak bring out the problems of intelligentnost in a broad social and moral context. We have determined the following characteristics of the concept: education, erudition, ability to think and speak, which may coexist with hubris, but in conjugation with the conscience, moral ideas bring the character to new level of personal development.
