The study is focused on the problem of power interpretation in the works of T. Hobbes and J. Locke in the ontological aspect. The debatable nature of the problematics is defined. The subject of philosophical understanding of the ontological nature of the phenomenon of power is revealed. It is testify, that in the ontological meaning the concept “power” is defined by the researchers heterogeneously or is not defined at all. Convergences and differences in understanding of the essence and purpose of power in the works of thinkers are marked on the basis of the historical-philosophical analysis. Thus, T. Hobbes interpreted this phenomenon as a form of being of a rationally acting subject, which asserts its superiority over objects - submitted. Only the absolute supremacy of the sovereign will bring good, it is he who should be endowed with supreme power. J. Locke opposes the philosopher in this sense, saying that the natural state gives a person the freedom in which he will obey only the laws of nature. He insists on the necessity of a separation of the government branches, the creation of a state in which laws that are fair and legitimate to all are in force. J. Locke rejects the moral standards of T. Hobbes. Conclusion dwells upon the fact that subordination is at the root of the ontological meaning of power in both philosophers, but the interpretation of the phenomenon itself is different.
