The article is the first to consider Nikolai Rubtsov's (1936-1971) translation legacy of the famous Russian writer of the 20th century. The author presents a lexical and semantic analyses of texts translated by N. Rubtsov comparing them with the original Ossetic poems by Khazbi Dzabolov (1931-1969). The research deals with the degree of translatory adequacy concerning the contents, the formal structure of the verse, and the national specifics of the source text. Juxtaposing the source and the target texts, we reveal the principal translation solutions made by Rubtsov to overcome the difficulties associated with the specifics of the Ossetic language. The study shows that Rubtsov's choice of the works to be translated was purely subjective and came from his artistic preferences. The themes of the works of the author and translator coincided, and the individual style of Dzabolov was in many respects similar to that of Rubtsov. The main strategies for translating the Osseticlines can be summarized in the following two ways. Firstly, the translator tried to expand the semantic field of the source text, and in some places enrich its figurative system. Secondly, on the contrary, Rubtsov resorted to changing the sentence structures and the form of the poem as a whole due to the narrowing of the text, levelling some of the nominative units. However, the deviations and additions introduced by Rubtsov did not, as we see it, affect the recipient's adequate perception of the meaning of the works. The translated text was informative enough to comprehend the author's original intentions.
