Use of non-fiction authentic video materials in teaching foreign language to students of non-linguistic universities

The article examines the role of authentic audio-visual tools in teaching a foreign (English) language to students for development of communicative competence, for expansion of linguistic and background knowledge and increase in active and passive vocabulary and also for intensification of educational process. The topicality of the issue under consideration is stipulated by lack of methodical researches on the use of nonfiction video materials like documentaries, educational films, talk shows and news programs in FL teaching. Particular attention is focused on the main stages of work with non-authentic videos - pre-demonstration, demonstration and post-demonstration. The article describes the features and the importance of using non-fiction video materials for improving the communicative (language, speech, socio-cultural) competence of students. The author suggests a number of linguistic and extra linguistic exercises for the development of the competence. Based on the foregoing article, the author comes to the conclusion that the use of authentic non-fiction audio-visual resources is becoming one of the modern and effective ways of teaching foreign languages in high school.
