The use of video hosting platforms for interpreting practice: a modern approach to developing interpreter language skills

With the development of digital technologies, language learning and oral translation practices have undergone significant changes. This article explores the use of the video hosting platforms in teaching oral translation, highlighting their role in developing key translation skills such as quick response, accuracy in conveying meaning, and the ability to work in real-time. In the context of modern digital technologies, video hosting platforms represent a unique platform offering a wide range of content - from political speeches and interviews to vlogs and educational programs. This allows students to become familiar with various speech styles, accents, cultural contexts, and genres, making the process of learning oral translation more dynamic and engaging. The article also emphasizes the importance of carefully selecting video materials for training, ensuring they align with students’ language proficiency, educational goals, and professional interests. The practical part of the article describes a class session with third-year students from the “Translator in the Field of Professional Communication” program, where a segment of a speech by Donald Trump was used to practice interpreting skills. The class was conducted in two stages: preparatory and main. Students not only translated the audio text but also analyzed their translations, which helped develop critical thinking skills, adaptation to spontaneous speech, and quick decision-making. The author concludes that integrating video hosting platforms into the educational process significantly enhances the effectiveness of teaching oral translation, offering students opportunities to practice in real-world conditions, improving their intercultural competence, and broadening their professional development horizons.
