The article considers the perspectives of using the tools of modern research conceptions to update the theoretical and methodological foundations of the academic musical teachings. The article focuses on the two competing positions of T. Kuhn and I. Lakatos. Together or separately, they are able to direct musicology to overcome the crisis in the content and methodology of academic teaching about tonality.
