The article examines the category of historical time in terms of documentary cinema. The aim of the work is to explore possible variations on the unifying images of historical time and documentary cinema, such as reality, time, image, “eye”, “skin”. Such phenomena most clearly mark the framework of the space of the piece of screen and characterize the gradual movement from the “outside” to the “inside”. Particular attention is paid to the teachings of K. Jaspers on the question of examining layers of directorial attention in documentary cinema. Such an integrated approach reveals the profound connection between documentary cinema and historical time, which, in the context of modernity, is interpreted as a time of human reflection on the past and on one's own existence. Documentary cinema, for its part, is seen as a means of saving humanity by striving to give an ontological painting to its protagonists, telling their stories and thereby extending the hand of eternity.
