On the history of the first Swedish translations of F.M. Dostoyevsky's novels

At present, the Swedish literary society is paying special attention to the Russian literary culture. Cooperation between our countries in this area is highly productive. Initially the interest towards Russian literature appeared in Sweden in the 18th century and was known to have a rather inconsistent character, which reflected unstable political relations between the two countries. During this particular time, such Russian writers as Turgenev, Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky became rather famous. With time, the Swedish reading public and the literary critics became more familiar with the culture of Russia and Russian literature. The perception of F.M. Dostoyevsky underwent through some changes and evolutionalized. In the late 19th century, namely in 1880, the writer’s first novels were published in Sweden. The article describes the history of the first translations of Dostoyevsky’s works. It presents the analysis of critical essays, which introduce different ways of the Russian genius creativity’s classification. The article also deals with some previously unknown works of Swedish researchers, which can be used for the further study of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novelism.
