The authors consider the English language screen history of adaptations of L. N. Tolstoyʼs novel “Anna Karenina” including great and multifarious body of lm versions. The authors dwell on four key full length specimens, shot between 1935 and 2012, analyzing genesis of the tradition and the role of these lms in its evolution. Alongside with examining the transformation of the lmmakers’ approaches to the context meaning structure of the literary original, the article indicates the progressive sophistication of cinematic adaptation as well as the lmmakers’ intention to retain the novel composition to the utmost and adequately embody the plot integrity. The authors accentuate that the success of the dialogue between the lm adaptations and viewer is directly determined by the level of the latter’s competence for such communication form and their willingness for co creation.
