The history of preschool and adolescent additional education development in Russia is analyzed. Different approaches to periodization of additional education history are considered. The very first forms of extracurricular activities in pre-revolutionary Russia appeared in the thirties of the XVIII century. These were literary clubs, hand-written magazines, philosophical treatises and theses, meetings in candle lights, amateurs’ concert parties, performance improvisations, parliamentary meetings, sport and art competitions. At the end of the XIX century, there was a term “out-of-school work”, which was understood as a cultural and educational activity. Different types of educational establishments for out-of-school education existed during XIX-XXI centuries: play grounds for children, teen clubs, colonies, workshops, music schools, clubs for young naturalists, art studios, bureau of school excursions, labor clubs (many of which gradually turned in to craft and technical ones), pioneer palaces, excursion and tourist stations, houses of art education, electro-technical clubs, clubs for young technicians, sport schools for children. Evolutionary modification of the system of out-of-school work and out-of-school education for children and teenagers in Russia is considered.
