The article shows the relevance of the problem of teaching and educating people with hearing impairments at the present stage. It also provides statistics on the number of people with hearing impairments in the world, in Russia and the Smolensk region, as well as historical data illustrating the development of the system of special education for people with hearing impairments in the Smolensk region for a hundred years: the period from the 20s of the twentieth century to the present. The study presents the history of the formation of the Smolensk Deaf Society and the invaluable contribution of people who played a significant role in organizing the education of deaf people and with hearing impairments in the Smolensk region. The work of specialized educational organizations in the Smolensk region and the history of their origin and development, the contingent of students, necessary logistical facilities of organizations are analyzed.
