The article is a review of the monograph by Professor Emeritus of the Ruhr University Markus Knapp “The Reason of Faith. An Introduction to Fundamental Theology”. The dependence of M. Knapp’s methodology on the Frankfurt Critical School’s ideology is noted, and the researcher’s selective approach in relation to choosing fundamental sources and ideas is also indicated. It is concluded that the extensive material collected by M. Knapp helps to recognize new names and trends in modern Catholic theology, as well as to feel how opportunistic in nature a theological position can be, while claiming to be objective and unbiased. Nevertheless, M. Knapp’s monograph, with all the comments addressed to it, as well as the ambiguity of the author’s views, is important for a reader who is able to draw independent conclusions.
