This report highlights some aspects of the publication of school textbooks in the period of the reconstruction of school education in the Soviet Union (1945-1950) on the basis of documents deposited by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation in the Russian State Archive. New primers began to be published thanks to the efforts of the State Didactical and Pedagogical Publishing House. The Academy of Pedagogical Science played an important role in the editing of these new primers. The documents of these years contain plans for publications, the increase in school textbook print runs, including primers and textbooks for the Russian language in the elementary school. In this period the new primers were not only a symbol of the return to peaceful life, but also “educational media” for the liquidation of illiteracy resulting from the war.
