The article deals with the issues of changing the ratio of theory and practice in the development of academic disciplines in secondary schools of the Soviet Union as a result of the education reform in the second half of the 50s - early 60s of the XX century. The prerequisites for the transformation of curricula are determined taking into account the level of development of the national pedagogical thought, the socio-political situation in the USSR, the global challenges facing our country in the period under review. The normative legal acts regulating the functioning and development of the education system of the 50s - 60s of the last century are analyzed. The real practical changes in the educational process of educational institutions are shown - an increase in the share of practical and laboratory work, updating the complex of methodological literature, expanding the social partnership of schools, improving the material and technical base of educational institutions. The changes in the activities of the Institute of preschool education within the framework of integration processes and the organization of the continuous learning model are considered. The directions of work on the training and retraining of professional pedagogical personnel of the period under consideration, taking into account the changed conditions, are determined. The positive and negative results of the practice-oriented model of education are shown comprehensively, based on the principle of historical objectivity.
