Nowadays, developing skills for academic writing to present scientific achievements in English is of paramount importance for every researcher. The purpose of this article is to study language peculiarities of titles in scientific articles and to develop a set of recommendations on how to make them. In the study we investigated over 500 titles in scientific articles indexed in the Scopus database based on continuous sampling method. Our study used a descriptive method combined with elements of quantitative analysis. The results show that the most commonly used grammatical structure in article titles is a complex noun phrase, which includes simple phrases with several semantic variations. The possibility to make out a list of grammatical structures shows that article titles are based on grammatical cliché that can be viewed as a genre feature. Based on the grammatical and lexical features of the studied title structure variations we suggest the recommendations on how to make titles in scientific articles in English.
