Ekphrastic discourse in "The birthday of the Infanta" by O.Wilde and its representation in the ilustrations by V.Britvin and D.Gordeev

The article is aimed at revealing the relations between the ekphrasis and the illustrations in the fairytale "The Birthday of the Infanta" by Oscar Wilde. The illustrations of such contemporary Russian artists as Denis Gordeev and Victor Britvin are analyzed. The individual style of each artist is considered. Their perceptions of the main characters of the fairytale are analyzed and compared to each other. The role of Wilde's allusions to certain pieces of visual art in the creation of the characters is uncovered, as well as the influence of these pieces on the illustrations.
