Environmental education abroad: status and outlook

The article describes a brief history of the development of environmental education, starting from the middle of the last century. Environmental education is viewed as a response to the society’s awareness of the natural crisis. The author focuses on the acquisition of institutional forms by environmental education and its diversity from the point of view of pedagogical psychology. The concept of ‘education for sustainable development’ is considered and its interaction with classical environmental education is analyzed. The article proposes a classification of modern approaches to environmental education according to the content that is included in the concept of ‘environment’. As a development prospect, a value approach is proposed that allows forming relationships with the environment from the point of view of ecocentric consciousness.
