Elective disciplines: what shall we offer to the students?

The article is devoted to elective courses in the structure of library and information education. The author presents the concept and experience of pedagogical development of elective courses for future librarians at the Moscow state Institute of culture. The distinctive features of the electives and the problems of their organization inherent in the Russian education are revealed. 5 strategies of pedagogical design of the system of elective courses for future librarians are determined. The paper presents the ways of solving the actual problems of the introduction of elective education in universities, implementing the training of library and information specialists.
