The article is concerned with ascertaining the capabilities of constructing a general systems theory on diverse methodological grounds. The inevitability of empirical approaches is established, as well as the need to deepen the ontological representation of isomorphisms. This requires the definition of the primary properties of being and their place in the ontological representation of the world. The article formulates three basic approaches to cognition, which can be the basis of the methodology of creating a general theory of systems: positivist, based on the accumulation of experience, its systematization and generalization in the form of scientific knowledge, using the methods of induction, analogy; natural-philosophical, which attempts to build a unified system of ideas about the world on the basis of empirical knowledge, using the methods of induction, traduction and adduction; the empirical-metaphysical, according to which a deductive method is used to cognize the world, repelling some primary properties of being, which can be given by “pure reason” (a priori) or determined inductively and traductively on the basis of empirical knowledge of the world. The last of these is suggested by the author as a priority.
