In this article the author attempts to study the opera of the modern Buryat composer Bair Bato Dugarovich Dondokov from the point of view of the cultural approach. The cultural dialogue «East West» is transmitted by the composer through the prism of vocal and stage art and is expressed in the choice of the plot, narrating about one of the signi cant events of Russian history, in the style of the musical language, combining modern, ancient, archaic techniques in the composition, as well as bright ethnic elements, in the choice of the genre sphere (symphonic, choral, vocal and choreographic) and means of expression (instrumentation academic and national ethnic, opposition and combination of pentatonics, chromatics, diatonics and tonal harmony, modal polyphony, techniques of splitting monodic melodic material, etc.). In each case, the author of the opera, created in the Buryat language, acts selectively, calling on listeners to engage in intercultural communication on the visual, acoustic and metaphysical levels. The main dominants of this major musical work are the themes of the meaning of life, freedom, love, duty, and the unity of the people. The author of the article concludes that a trend has emerged in the domestic culture of the 21st century that opposes the secularization of spiritual culture the threshold of a new cultural paradigm directly related to the semantization of Russian culture and art.
