The history of the Estonian Orthodox diaspora is just beginning to be studied, and therefore the school issue is still practically unexplored. Information from the reports of the Brotherhood of St. Isidor of Yuryev as well as from the documents of the Central State Historical Archive in St. Petersburg allow getting an overview and tracing the development of Estonian parochial schools in the province. The St. Petersburg school certainly dominated, standing out against the background of the Russian parochial schools, but other parochial schools were also quite competitive, to name but in Narva and Gatchina. The strong competition from Russian parish, zemstvo and Lutheran schools made this network of schools difficult to establish, but on the whole they were able to withstand this competition.
