The aim of this article is to analyze the stages of development of penitentiary social work in the context of the transformation of the modern Penal Enforcement System of the Russian Federation (UIS). The author examines the formation of penitentiary social work in Russia in the framework of 6 stages that marked the transition to the current system of social work in the penal system. The periodization proposed by the author is based on the concept of the development of social assistance to convicts in Russia, proposed by M.G. Detkov. The author notes that the history of the development of penitentiary social work in Russia is of a sinusoidal nature and constantly returns to its roots. The novelty of this work lies in the articulation of M.G. Detkov's concept of the social assistance for the convicts in Russia, taking into account the current stage of its development, previously not systematized in this vein. During the author's research aimed at identifying the specifics of organizing social work with convicts in male and female penal colonies in Nizhny Novgorod and Vologda regions on the development of their socially useful ties, it was found that there have been no significant changes in the process of organizing social work and developing the methodological basis for implementing social assistance to convicts over the past 10 years.
