Introduction. In France, like in all countries of the world, the system of assessing the students’ learning outcomes is positioned as an integral element of the educational process. In the school educational space, the assessment procedure plays the role of an integrating factor, the leading means of students’ diagnostics, which makes it possible to clearly outline their problems and achievements, to carry out feedback reflection. The aim is to present a retrospective analysis of the formation and development trends of the system of assessing learning outcomes of secondary school students in France; to reveal the stages of its development and emphasize the importance of the heritage of works of French, Russian and foreign scientists who had the greatest influence on the formation of this area of pedagogical studies.
