The article is about ethnic history and ethnogenesis of Highlanders of Southern Uzbekistan and Kungrats most of which lived in Surkhan Oasis. One of the tribes which lived in the end of XIX - beginning of XX centuries is named Tokchi. It is regarded as one of ethnical groups of Uzbeks, and its name ‘tokchi’ means ‘Highlanders’. Their place of living was mountains and submontane regions, that is why they were called ‘Highlanders’. Highlanders by their status were after Chagatay and Kungrats.
