The article deals with the analysis of functioning the direct ethnonyms and indirect adjective ethnonyms ‘German’ and ‘American’ in the novel “Purity” by Jonathan Franzen. On the one hand, the ethnonyms are the representatives of the stereotyped representations of the nation, explicating the leitmotif of the contradiction, on the other hand, they are the metaphorical reflection of the basic intention of the novel in the suggested author’s individual context.
