В данной статье рассматриваются теоретические императивы, с помощью которых теология и философия могут обратиться к фундаментальным научным проблемам и оспаривать их. Недавние открытия в области кооперативной теории игр и теоретической биологии показали, что некоторые глубоко укоренившиеся, утилитарные и индивидуалистические принципы того, что называют «неодарвинизмом», могут быть поставлены под вопрос. Смысл этих свидетельств напрямую связан с понятиями альтруизма, жертвы, причинности и индивидуальности - понятиями, не менее важными для богословия. Избегая ловушек, типичных для современных споров между «религией» и «наукой», которые ищут «подтверждения» принятых по умолчанию убеждений, автор утверждает, что возвращение к патрологическому пониманию «духовных чувств» дает нам новые категории и новые практики созерцания и анализа.
