In this paper, the authors investigate a range of issues concerning the evolution of the national security concept from the standpoint of historical and legal science. The necessity of the scientific coverage of safety in all its forms is pointed out. The authors note that at the end of 20th century the range of issues is expanding and, accordingly, the subject of security research. Particular attention is paid to the types and levels of safety and operational models, regimes and institutions of international security. The conclusion consists in the fact that in the post-soviet period when Russian science is completely open for cooperation with the outside world, three types of intellectual sources of the Russian security theory can be distinguished: western theory, based on the traditional paradigm of realism, liberalism and globalism; Russian non-Marxist theory; Marxism reformed close to European social democracy.
